Stoudamire Wants Out

Okay, I know I've had a hard time getting the blog going again of late. (Thoughts on Navarro's NBA potential and team role coming sometime this week -- I promise.) But I haven't seen this pop up anywhere so I had to post it. From the Tucson Citizen. Most predictable story or the offseason? Most comical? Both? You decide:

Quote:
Former UA All-American Damon Stoudamire says he's as healthy as he's been in some time and is getting ready for another season in the NBA, his 13th.

But he'd also like to play for a winner.

"Hopefully I can get out of Memphis - that rebuilding process is hard,'' he said Sunday, after he scored 21 points in the Lute Olson Classic. "I've got to be professional but it's one of those situations where you never think you'll be in. You want to get put in a situation where you want to win. Individually things don't matter.''

Stoudamire, who turns 34 next month, still has two years left on his contract that pays him $4 million a season.
"I'm going to keep my fingers crossed (about being moved) but I'm not going to make any demands or nothing,'' he said.

"Anybody who's been in my position knows. You see the writing on the wall so I'm hoping at the end of the day we can work something out.''

Just wanted to let you know we are giving you love up here in Boston. We have more talent but an insane coach - you guys - well, you just get to have fun. I'm pretty jealous....

I believe people are misinterpreting Damon's comments.

Damon being traded was already being 'reported' by Ron Tillery in his article titled "Can the updated Griz roster fit the new game plan?" before Damon made those comments. Tillery wrote "Griz brass expects Stoudamire to simply "train" the young guns. But this youth movement isn't what Stoudamire signed up for. Remember, he came to Memphis as a free agent, suffered an otherwise career-ending injury and came back to play. He's healthy and wants to contribute to a winner. After all, does a 34-year-old point guard fit the new direction? Don't be surprised if Stoudamire and the Griz work out a trade or buyout before or during training camp."

I emailed the person writing the blog for the Tucson paper and asked for clarification. He reokied saying he has known Damon for 17 years and his questions involved his feeling about the rumor and Damon's reply was based on that and not on his desire. Damon made it clear to the blog writer that he is not asking to be traded or released.

If Tillery's trade idea turns out to be true then Damon would be fine with it is how the author made it sound not that Damon was suggesting he should be traded. The blog does make it sound otherwise but the author did tell me that wasn't his intention.

makes sense to me...buy him out...use the marginal savings to increase JCN's contract...

I say we buy him out. Let him go play for somebody else - Navarro and Miller can both play a bit of point if needed, and hopefully we won't need them to. The only way Conley and Lowry will get better is by playing a lot. No hard feelings - so long as he acts reasonably and lets the Grizzlies out for a modest price.

I hope we don't let this drag out like we did with Eddie "I can tank it like VC" Jones last season. It's obvious he doesn't want to mentor, so get rid of him/release him now.
