Mayo Goes LaLoosh in Vegas

Like Bull Durham's great Nuke LaLoosh, O.J. Mayo announced his presence with authority in his pro debut earlier tonight.

Mayo had 15 points, 5 assists, 3 steals and a monster dunk, while fellow rookie Darrell Arthur scored a game-high 18 points with silky outside shooting as the Grizzlies beat the Hornets 88-75 in the team’s first game at the Las Vegas Summer League.

The game was shown only via a live stream on NBA.com. (No, I didn’t get a chance to watch.)

Mayo was the lead of the game story on NBA.com.

True Hoop’s live blog has some nice things to say about the Baby Grizzlies.

There was a very active and entertaining game thread over on the Grizzlies message board.

You commented on the Chris Vernon show that we needed to spend free agent money, but not on a max contract for Okafur. Is there ANY OTHER power forward in the NBA that we have ANY shot at signing? He is not the best, and perhaps not worth 12-15M, but he is a good rebounder, solid scorer and he is young. Apparently, he is also put out with Charlotte. I can't think of any other way to solve our major problem that we have had for at least 4 years (interior defense and rebounding). Just my thoughts. I understand your point, but where are we going to find that sort of guy if we don't at least try to get one?

oh sorry, it's Canis Hoopus, a Wolves fan site, canishoopus.com, been a lot of Memphis talk on there recently, for obvious and less obvious reasons. I guess some guy there must know you because after one of the posters recommended your site, another mentioned that you'd gone to Mac. This must all sound quite strange to you!

yeah -- Mac.

What is Canis?

Chris Herrington | Wed, 07/16/2008 - 7:41pm

Yeah, so I heard on Canis - Mac no? Funny, the only person I know from Memphis also went there. Thanks for the comments, I'd be loathe to part with Smith...guess we'll see what happens.

I know there might be some interest in Craig Smith on the Grizzlies part. I could see a sign-and-trade deal involving Lowry or Crittenton for Smith, with maybe something else involved on the Wolves in. Carney would be a good bet, but he can't be dealt with another player for a while.

Carney straight up for one of the guards wouldn't get it done.

BTW -- I'm a bit of a Wolves fan too. Went to college in the Cities long before Memphis had a team and rooted for the Wolves.

Hey T'wolves fan, that would be cool if Memphis could get Carney. Maybe a package of Carney and a first and second round pick for Lowry or Crittenton wold get the deal done.

Hi, Timberwolves fan here - I've just been reading some of your posts, I think they're great. Just have a question for you: there's been some talk up here about how we might be able to nab one of your point guards (since you have so many) - say Lowry (I think Conley is wishful thinking) - for, say, a package including Rodney Carney. Does this sound viable to a Grizz fan? I ask because many of us are hoping that talks between your F.O. and ours are going on right now...

Thanks, also you mentioned in a post that it's still not clear how Kevin O'Neill was brought into town. I'll be interested to see what you can dig up on this - the guy seems to have been very corrosive in a couple of the places he's been (Arizona, Toronto), hope for Memphis's sake that he's on the same page as Iavaroni.

Very nice. I know this is just Summer League play, but this is exactly what you hope for out of the young guys. Darrell Arthur's numbers are very encouraging. And that dunk by O.J. was pretty awesome too. I will definitely tune in to watch tonight's game against the Lakers. I am most interested in seeing how Conley and Mayo play along side one another. I think that is the key.

It is unfortunate that Marc Gasol is currently in Spain training for the Olympics. I would love to see what this team looks like with him out there too. Of course, if he were on the Grizzlies' Summer League team, we would almost have next year's starting line-up out there. The only thing missing would be Rudy. Oh well, we will get a look at that squad soon enough.

It sure is nice to be excited about the Grizzlies again.
