Grizzlies-Rockets Game Post

Im live at FedExForum for the preseason game between the Grizzlies and Rockets. Tiger Hero Joey Dorsey is laying bricks in shootaround while Marc Gasol is working on his jump hook.

As is apparent, Im still having keyboard issues, so this will be an apostrophe and quotation-mark free night. I will have a new computer before the next game, so this problem will not carry over into the regular season.

As always, Ill pop in here as seems warranted and will respond to any comments that show up through the night. Look for a full post-game report later tonight.

On Chris Vernon's show on Wednesday that if the Griz had gotten the #1 pick, he would have taken Derrick Rose. He keeps on growing on me man. I hope Heisley lets him spend our team's damn money this offseason or next.

Yeah, I had thought of harrington too, as they were shopping him earlier in the day. We would have to ship something like lowry+ walker or lowry+hak+jaric for us to absorb the money from harrington. The question there is can you resign harrington at a reasonable contract (less than he's making now) if you're the grizz? I dont think so. If not is he a 1-2 year rental, and if so, what is the point of that when we wont be competing for a championship.

It would be great to get kleiza, but the nuggets didnt bite on that this summer.

Golden State is certainly one of the first teams to come to mind given that they have a need at point guard and have plenty of assets (including all the ones you mentioned) that might interest the Grizzlies.

The Warriors also once negotiated a trade for Hakim Warrick but backed out of it to draft Patrick O'Bryant instead.

I'd also add Al Harrington to the list of Warriors commodities I could see tossed into a trade scenario with the Grizzlies.

Other teams that come to mind that might have a need at point guard: Nuggest (Kleiza?), Magic (Reddick would be of interest but not valuable enough by himself), Heat (can't really deal Haslem without getting a center back).

I think its probably too early to get very serious on this subject, but I would certainly put Lowry at the top of the team's potential trade list, and would put several other players (Warrick, Crittenton) higher on that list than Darko.

Have you thought about possible destinations for these two since last Thursday on the Cvernon show? With Monta Ellis out for a few months, shouldnt we be calling Golden state and inquiring on a lowry/hak for some mix of brandan wright, azubuike, a #1 or bellinelli combo?

They've been starting randolph in the preseason, and wright seems to have taken a backseat. Lowry would give them a PG while Ellis is out, and hak fits right into their any-shot-is-a-good-shot philosophy. The only downside is that lowry cant shoot, and they prefer guards that can launch 3 pointers.

There is NO question who is the primary point guard on this team. Any suggestion that this was an open issue came from people who aren*t close enough to the situation to know and has been decisively corrected this preseason.

Man Conley looks really good. A lot of people have really been sleeping on him, but I think he is undoubtedly the starter on this team. Sure he didn't have a great rookie season, but it looks he has improved immensely over the summer. He has gotten much stronger and his jump shot is better too.

I can seriously see him as being a top-5 point guard in this league in a few years, and definately our point guard of the future.

He reminds me of Tony Parker so much. And this is probably stretching it, but I think he could actually be a little bit better than Parker. Now this would only happen if he reached his full potential, but I honestly think he could be that great.

As long as Mike keeps working on that jump shot, and he learns how to use his elite speed, he could be a great one.

I don*t think is nearly as explosive and powerful an athlete as a young McDyess. Not sure yet who I*d compare him to, but I do like what I see.

He *could* be the power-forward of the future, but I don*t think the team knows enough now to feel comfortable about that.

I certainly think he has more upside at that position than Hak. *good starter* is probably about right for his upside.

REALLY slow internet connection here tonight, by the way.

Chris Herrington | Thu, 10/16/2008 - 1:48am

why does hak shoot the ball so much? its not his offense, but it seems like everytime he touches it he throws it up. it seems to me he would be more useful to the grizz moving the ball around and more valuable to another team if he had more skills as a passer or better position as a rebounder. instead he is out of position looking for the ball and a poor shot selection.

who do you compare Darrell Arthur to? I have heard he could be a pre-injury Antonio McDyess type of player. do you think he can reach that potential? is he our power forward of the future, or is it going to be a draft pick or free agent signing? i think he will turn out to be a great 6th man, and his upside is a good starter in this league.

I*ll address this in the post-game, but they won*t keep 15. It*ll be 13 or 14. Ross is the only player whose deal isn*t guaranteed. (Other than Petway, who won*t make the team.)

Chris Herrington | Thu, 10/16/2008 - 12:54am

we know the core players that will make the team, but who do you think are the last 3 to start the season on the inactive list?

do you think ross makes the team? will walker make the team?

i am praying haddadi plays d league and improves, but i know he is a project.

By the way, I was shocked when Joey Dorsey went ahead of CDR in the draft. CDR, in my opinion, could be the shooting guard of the future in New Jersey after Vince Carter is out of there, while Joey just isn't skilled enough to be more than a bench player. I think he could actually be a pretty good role player, but that's just my opinion

CDR is extremely talented offensively, is really smart on the court, is a better athlete than people give him credit for, and he will reach his ceiling, however high it is, because he works his ass off.

Joey on the other hand is a brilliant athlete, rebounds very well, and isn't scared of anything. But he will never be a starter because he is just too much of a liability on offense to get starter's minutes.

I'm a die-hard Tiger fan, so I want both of them to be superstars. But I definately think CDR will be a much better NBA player than Dorsey.

I asked Iavaroni before the game about Crittentons relative lack of PT so far and he seemed a little regretful about that.

He said that he was focused more on getting a look at Buckner and Ross early because the team has decisions to make about those guys, particularly Ross, whose contract is not guaranteed. And he said hes talked to Crittenton about that.

For what its worth, Critt was the first guy off the bench tonight and has gotten about 4 first quarter minutes so far.

I agree that he needs more court time. He*s a legit prospect and a commodity that the team needs to maximize, and that doesn*t happen unless he developed. We*ll see.

Chris Herrington | Thu, 10/16/2008 - 12:36am

Chris what's going on with J-Critt? Why isn't Ivy playing him? He has a lot of talent, but he can't get better unless he gets some PT. Do you think we should send him down to the D-League? I mean if he's just gonna ride the bench every game and not be able to contribute, we may as well send him down there, let him develop, and then bring him back up when he is ready to get some minutes.

tommyh (not verified) | Thu, 10/16/2008 - 12:27am

Well, he will not be better than Darrell Arthur, which is more to the point.

Had he gone undrafted and the team signed him to a minimum-level deal (a la Haddadi), I dont think anyone could complain.

I could see Dorsey having a Bo Outlaw-like NBA career, but that is his upside. And that is a longshot.

Chris Herrington | Wed, 10/15/2008 - 11:38pm

all of the tiger fans wearing blue shaded glasses think we should have drafted this guy. yes he is better than the iranian guy, but he will not be good in the nba.
